“The Dog Stars” is a post-apocalyptic movie directed by Ridley Scott. Brought to you by a deadly flu, this movie begins with some “The Postman” vibes. The core cast is rather small, and some nameless extras fill out the rest. The trailer for this movie shows you some stampeding Buffalo, and the film delivers you some Indians to go along with. Which fits in with the Western movie vibes of “The Postman”.As the film goes along, somebody somewhere must have gotten nostalgia for George A. Romero, because this film took a left turn not quite on the map. But once you get past that, this movie moves along to a rather happier ending than you might otherwise expect. Two characters share a running bit where one character confuses Mormons with Mennonites. My only question with this film is where all of this functional gasoline is coming from, because it’s been years since the collapse of civilization, and production of gasoline is not explicitly referred to outside of always having some gasoline on hand. We do see solar power in use in multiple ways, so that’s cool. The life lesson in this film is explicitly stated by one character, and it is a good one to remember. 2h run time, and it seemed to go by pretty well. Not too fast, not too slow. Decently paced for a post-apocalyptic movie with Western themes, if randomly flavored by Romero.
